Breckon to run for Chief Minister?
Friday 28th November 2008, 2:59PM GMT.
THE path is clearing for Senator-elect Alan Breckon to run for Chief Minister.
Senators Ben Shenton and Freddie Cohen and St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft ruled themselves out of the running today, leaving a much-diminished field.
Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur is the only candidate to have formally declared so far, and it looks as if Deputy Breckon, who came second in the Senatorial election last month, will be a challenger for the position. It also appears that Senator Stuart Syvret, who was the unsuccessful challenger to Senator Frank Walker when the top job was first contested three years ago, will run if he can get the required six signatures on a nomination form.
Deputy Breckon (pictured) says that he will consider his position over the weekend and make a formal announcement on Monday — as does Deputy Roy Le Hérissier, whose name has been suggested by some fellow Members but who described himself as ‘very much an outsider’.

I really think the Chief Minister should be nominated and chosen by the island electorate not by States members alone.

I hope Alan gets the job. He would make an excellent CM. Could you imagine TLS on newsnight? How embarrassing.

Terry Le Suer was “accosted” in the Co-op by a little old lady concerned about her shrinking pension and rising costs. Terry’s reaction was to abandon his trolley and leave the store. This is fact.
Now, imagine Alan Breckon in the same situation. He would take the lady for a civilised cup of tea, listen to her concerns and assure her that he was doing all he could to change things. Then, he would contact her to say what was happening. This is also fact, despite being a scenario.
Alan Breckon is a humane and compassion driven gentleman who also happens to be a politician.
Who do you want representing you and this island?

Oh God!!! the blind leading the blind!!!

Oh Good Grief! Syvret in the running. We’d be better off with Aubin the Goose in charge.

Alan Breckon taking Frank Walkers job…is that what I just read ?
Best man for the job…a peoples person looking out for the people. Good luck Alan, you have my best wishes

I don’t have any views on the political alliances of the person we need as Chief Minister, only that their views are not narrow, that they are capable and with the intellect and the experience that this position demands. We must not forget that Jersey’s economic position is more vulnerable than ever before. Jersey now relies completely and utterly on the finance industry alone, which is again under US and EU scrutiny. That is fact and beyond party politics.Electing a Chief Minister through popular vote, rather than through the elected members of the States, is a recipe for disaster.

Jersey Joe- are you sure Terry was in the Co-Op? I always assumed he never went anywhere near a shop which is why he is so totally out of touch with Jersey prices and the fact that most places charge VAT.Seriously though,Alan Breckon is a decent and caring man as stated in comments so far but whether he is the man for the job I’m not too sure. But then I cannot think of one single States Member who IS right for the job.Good luck Jersey!

Allowing another member of the ‘old boys club’ into the position of Chief Minister would at best be disastrous for any semblence of ‘democracy’ this island has, and at worst frankly a disgrace to every single one of you.
Who the people want in charge is irrelevant. The reality is that the person with the most ‘friends’ (and i use the term very, very losely) in the States will triumph. That counts Syvret out and as much as i would love to see him in charge, Breckon, is a relative newcomer.
To any states member who reads this: If you allow Terry Le Sueur to become chief minister you are ignoring a majority of islanders and proving nothing more than you are happy to tow the ‘old boys’ ‘my brothers the chief law maker and i rule the house’ line, and that alone will NOT see you through the next election. The time of the clueless pensioner are slowly dissapearing, now, the more knowledgable younger generation have something to say – forgetting that would be a grave error.

Lobby your Constables, Deputies and Senators and let them know immediately who you would like to see as Chief Minister from those who are considering putting themselves forward and also your second choice. It’s true that only States Members get to vote for Chief Minister but you stil have the democratic right to let your elected members know what you feel, particularly those who categorically refused to commit themselves re who they would vote for as CM if elected – in particular Ian Le Marquand.

I absolutely agree with Debbie’s comments. Having known Alan for many years I can vouch for his sincerity. He acknowledges our concerns and uses his best endeavours to correct any misgivings. He’s in touch with reality, unlike Terry Le Sueur. I have yet to find anyone who would support his role within the States of Jersey!
Good luck Alan, you’d get my vote again for sure.

Nellie, is that you or Jeremy?

Give Terry Le Sueur a break from critism. He knows what he’s doing and has served Jersey very well – long may he reign!

“long may he reign!”
I though he was applying to be Chief Minister not the king.

To be honest, Terry may not be a bad treasury minister but is he Chief minister material? Alan Breckon can be relied on to bring a more human and humane face to Jersey’s political landscape. Instead of management, we could have leadership. Rather than spin, we might have substance. And replace a culture of fear and secrecy with one of one dialog and integrity.
Sad thing is, can the politicians be trusted to vote the right way and not be badgered and bullied into a corner?

Breckon may be a nice guy, but I would worry that he would be too easily swayed by the JDA.

I don’t trust Phillip Ozouf who is almost certain to be Terry le Sueur’s Treasury Minister and effective deputy.
I am sure that he will see himself as the Crown Prince and wield far too much influence in the Council of Ministers.
Full speed ahead on the Esplanade Quarter
