Greenfields: How wonderful to hear some real common sense
Saturday 29th November 2008, 10:00AM GMT.
From Evie Perchard.
IT was very refreshing and most reassuring to read the Rev Geraldine Baudains’s letter (JEP, 25 November) regarding the Greenfields children’s remand centre.
Having heard and read so much histrionic invective about the treatment in Jersey, it was a relief to be given such truthful and informed information about the situation as it really is.
It is also a relief to know that such a compassionate and sensible lady is on our Youth Panel and is in a position to administer common sense judgment on some of our unruly children.
Her point about not raising the age of criminal responsibility is a poignant reminder of how out of control young people can become. Thank you, Gerry, for setting the record straight.

It’s a shame that this ‘compassionate and sensible lady’ seemed to go on her visit(s) to Greenfields with her eyes closed.
The Howard League Report deserves to be read.
Although an extreme example, one is reminded of the comments of Red Cross observers on the German concentration camps during the second world war – the inmates all look happy and industrious, and there were no complaints when we spoke to them.

It’s nice to see how confident you feel on 6 visits in six years. Somewhat different to what staff and residents have to say. As long as someone tells you all is well, just bury your head even deeper in the sand and convince yourselves all children but your own are bad.

Evie, I hope you are sitting down, this might come as a bit of a shock to you.
Gerry was not setting any record straight. She was giving her opinion.
There can be a big difference between opinion and truth. Just because you badly want to hear something, it does not necessarily not make it the truth.
