GST: A little too much irony in this headline

THANK you for publishing my ‘Vote for us’ letter (JEP, 26 November).

Unfortunately it would appear from the numerous comments that I’ve received that the second deck of heading you used may have led people to believe that I was actually anti-GST and, additionally, may have caused other readers to ignore the content. Given no workable options at present, and if the rate is kept at a low level, this could not be further from the truth.

My intention was to raise awareness of some of the ploys being used by the candidates to seduce the electorate; seeing the results it looks as if they succeeded in some cases. I fear that, although done with good intent, the heading was possibly too ironic.

“Given no workable options”? Why is it that if something is repeated often enough, people will begin to believe it is actual fact. The assertion that there is no viable alternative to GST is totally false – there are numerous extremely workable options. Look up Deputy Southern’s website for in-depth, well researched alternatives and when eventually one/some of these are adopted by the new house, hopefully a great many people will wake up to the fact that they were thoroughly duped.

Do not be mistaken, GST was only adopted because it can be raised from 3% so easily – it was never intended to remain at a low level for very long.

Thankfully we now have lots of new States members who were not taken in by this “spin” and have pledged to fight against GST.
