Now it’s official: Breckon will run
Monday 1st December 2008, 2:59PM GMT.
SENATOR-elect Alan Breckon is running for Chief Minister. A week from today, he will go head-to-head with Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur to try to win the backing of the States to become Jersey’s second Chief Minister.
Deputy Breckon, who came second in the Senatorial election in October, says that the differences between him and Senator Le Sueur are political, not personal, and if elected he would keep the Treasury Minister in his current role.
‘I don’t have personal issues with him, but I’ve got some issues on policy and some of the ways that the Council of Ministers have conducted business out of the public eye with a degree of secrecy,’ said Senator-elect Breckon. ‘I don’t believe that we need more of the same. That’s not just about tax cuts, but what we spend money on. We must make better use of public money before we spend more.
‘I’m not doing deals with people for ministerial positions and I’m not touting around. The only one I’m certain on is that I would leave Terry Le Sueur where he is. The only alternative is [Senator Philip] Ozouf, and I think that he is dangerous.’

Its official, there is a Santa Claus and he’s offered Jersey the chance of a great present in the form of a Chief Minister we can all believe in!
Now, if we can just get the tooth fairy to run as Treasury Minister it will be a brilliant 2009 despite the global situation.

I understood that Senator Syvret was also running for the role of Chief Minister, which does mean that it is not a head to head between Deputy Breckon and Senator Le Sueur. I find this story inaccurate and misleading in this respect.

The matter of who becomes Chief Minister is something which the people should decide.
It is a well worn fact that Walker had no franchise from the people to occupy the position. Similarly, Terry Le Sueur has no popular franchise. Athough it is clear that Le Sueur is determined to take the job irrespective of what the voters think, it is also clear that, if he has any respect for democracy, he will withdraw. Mr Le Sueur is, no doubt, a thoroughly decent man but he does not have the qualities required to be Jersey’s foremost politician. He is out of touch with the people and practices a dogmatic, “ears closed” style rather like Blair did when he helped invade Iraq [and misled parliament along the way].
At least there will no be some form of election, even if it will be behind closed doors, bereft of public input and incapable of challenge or scrutiny. Good luck Alan Breckon.

Penguin – it’s not just about being in touch with the people it’s more about being able to represent Jersey on an international scale and winning business/raising profile. I think Alan would be a great CM one day but think he needs a few years in the Ministerial job first to get exposure to that sort of thing.

Andy,
Syvret would have to find 6 states members to nominate him, and given that he has alienated himself completely, called tham all gangsters and half-wits and basically incapable of collaborating with anyone, it is very unlikely he will be nominated. We are very fortunate!!

good luck alan.
but i do think the public should have the right to choose the chief minister.

If Alan Breckon is elected chief minister then this will be the best thing that has happened to this island for a long time.
If Terry le Sueur is elected then it will be pretty disasterous and I would worry how that would impact on the ordinary islander, whatever that is, but I think I fall into that catogory! but, can you imagine what would happen if Syvret was elected.
Syvret and his little army of blog writing sheep are so busy jumping on the whole “what’s in it for me cos I have been so hard done by and it’s everyone elses fault but mine and everyone who earns a better wage than me or has a better life than me must be on the take and everything is a cover up and if it doesn’t go my way it’s not fair” bandwagon, that could anyone really take anything this mans says seriously. apart from the extremely deluded of course.
I feel it is between Le Sueuer and Breckon. Anyone with half a braincell isn’t going to back Syvret for CM.
