CHANNEL Islands tennis is on a high after the men’s team won promotion to Group 5 for the first time at the weekend in the Lawn Tennis Association’s Winter County Cup.

Jersey juniors Charlie Cohen, James Faudemer and James Connelly were selected following their recent success in the U18 Junior County Cup and they did not let anyone down as the CI won all three of their matches to win Group 6.

The CI defeated Northamptonshire 5-4 on Friday; on Saturday they were 6-3 winners against Cumbria while on Sunday they won the final four rubbers to defeat Avon 5-3 – the match ending there and then despite one rubber still due to be played.

CI captain Andrew Evans said: ‘It was a fantastic win and a great weekend. ‘Beforehand I did not think we had a chance of being promoted because we had such a young team. I honestly went with the hope of winning one match and staying in the group but to win all three and win the group and gain promotion was extremely pleasing.’
