Sorry, Deputy-elect Maçon, but you really should resign
Thursday 4th December 2008, 2:59PM GMT.
From Michael Blampied.
SHOULD Master Jeremy Maçon (I consider the title Mr inappropriate in the circumstances) have a modicum of integrity/pride/sense (admittedly unlikely, given recent revelations), he would immediately tender his resignation as Deputy for St Saviour No 1 District.
This would allow Messrs Nightingale and Scott-Warren the opportunity to contest the seat once again on a far more transparent and hence hopefully fairer basis, and in so doing possibly attract some of the vote previously garnered by young Jeremy that might now be viewed as having a taint of misrepresentation attached to it.
For what is clear from this sorry episode is that rather than standing on the ‘right-on’ mandate of being the voice of the Island’s ‘yoof’ (and having doubtlessly received a cross from many of the new and younger electorate as a consequence thereof), the boy Jeremy has more than likely just been doing and saying what his mummy has been telling him to.
Frankly, that stinks, and if the individual concerned does not do the decent thing, then a public inquiry should be launched into what appears to be a fraud upon the electorate of St Saviour No 1 District. At very least this might show the outside world that efforts are being made to prevent the Island’s politics being labelled as Mickey Mouse.
On a final note, and while Deputy Southern’s advice to Maçon Junior is to be applauded, did any other readers not sigh deeply at the evidence provided by the leaked e-mail exchange which appeared to demonstrate that the JDA’s political strategy under the new Council of Ministers will comprise of large doses of personal insults aimed at other politicians?
Rather than deriding others perhaps the JDA should be focusing on identifying their party’s first credible candidate for Chief Minister.

Blampied, (I consider the title Mr inappropriate in the circumstances) as a parishioner of St Martin you have no right to criticise the electorate of St Saviour No 1.
They have elected a fine young man in Jeremy Macon and your bigoted view and use of the term
“ ‘yoof’ ” show you to be one of those people who resist change in any form.
This whole affair is the fault of Deputy Southern and he should admit it.
His actions have allowed the media to swoop on an individual who does not fit the native establishment line. In fact your line.
Give Deputy Macon a chance before you start throwing stones!

Anne Port St Martin? I never realised that was in St Saviour No 1! OK so a parish Deputy can vote on island wide issues. As far as Island wide issues go, is taking some advice from your mum that big?
We’ve got issues of a mamouth scale going on island wide, the Graham Power suspension, the Howard League of Penal reforms report, the Harcourt debacle, the £106 million unneccessary and potentially toxic incinerator, about to invest how many millions on a finance centre? while in economic turmoil!! and what does Michael (from St Martin) want to write about in the JEP? A deputy taking direction from his mum in St Saviour no 1 and thinks it is an offence worthy of calling for his resignation!!
I don’t think the calibre of the candidate is as big an issue as the calibre of the voter.

Give the guy a chance! He hasn’t just done it for the joy-ride, and he must have worked hard to get himself where he is. Ok, not so great that the mother is involved, but he has learnt that quickly. And as a ‘yoof’, I resent the implication that we cannot do good for our community. Kicking him whilst he is down is no way to send a positive message to the ‘yoof’ – he might be only 21, but the way things are going the States could do with some new blood who might actually do the best for the community rather themselves.
And my final note is: if you are worried that us ‘yoof’ don’t know what we are doing and are coming in trying to change things left right and centre without any experience – you should be. He’s not the only one who wants to make a difference…

Mr Blampied – what’s the difference of being influenced by your mum or influenced by a few people who are moaning about something they don’t really understand or for that matter being religiously influenced by the Dean who has a say (but no vote) in the Chamber?
Basically we’re all influenced by something or someone in pretty much every decision we make… Especially politics – where influence appears to be the bedrock of decision making for some of the less honourable politicians who’d rather score a minor popular vote than looking at the greater good.

Deputy Southern’s attitude always appears to comprise of large doses of personal insults aimed at other politicians? Isn’t it about time he started acting with a bit of mature responsibility, respect and dignity towards his fellow politicians

I also disliked the tone of this letter regarding age, and have noted similar remarks about Mr Macon.

I agree with this letter entirely. The voters on this occassion have been duped. I also think Southern’s personal vendetta against ministers is shameful. The outside will be viewing this new government as Mickey Mouse. No doubts about it.

Personal vendettas do occur in politics.
There was Tony Benn v Denis Healy in the late seventies, Margaret Thatcher v Michael Heseltine in the eighties and there were some extremely personal clashes between Mrs Thatcher and Neil Kinnock.
Nobody was running around accusing the British government of being Mickey Mouse.
Maybe some of your correspondents should try and get a wider political perspective.

Well I voted for him and I want him to stay and I am of the parish concerned.
Being the Mother of a Son I know full well that any advice I give my son is more than anyone else can do to safeguard both him and his decisions and reputation in any walk of life. In fact any other advisor wouldn’t come close to those qualifications, yet all polititions have someone who has advised them at some stage. but it’s usually undercover. Nellie can’t go into the States with him, and did I hear he has a degree in Politics?
Do your best for us Jeremy, it’s not only the young you are fighting for. We Mums are behind you as well. Stay there please!

Judging by the way our council of ministers continually vote ‘en bloc’ should we not be calling the present Chief Minister Mum as well?
