Flybe provides tourism boost
Saturday 6th December 2008, 10:00AM GMT.
JERSEY’S troubled tourism industry received a boost this week when Flybe announced new and more frequent routes to and from the Island.
But the airline also had bad news for its staff in Norwich. It is closing its base at the city’s airport with the loss of 45 jobs, most of them aircrew. The Exeter-based company blamed the economic downturn for the decision.
The news concerning Jersey is more favourable. From March, Flybe will begin flights between the Island and Inverness, Dundee and Kent. And the regional airline is increasing the number of flights to and from Cardiff, Doncaster, Birmingham, Exeter and Newcastle. The summer schedule will also see the return of flights to Nice, Aberdeen, Belfast, Glasgow and Southend.
It means that Flybe will operate 19 routes to and from Jersey. Assistant Economic Development Minister Deputy Alan Maclean said that the new routes would boost Jersey’s tourism. ‘I am delighted with the new routes that Flybe are introducing in 2009, which further demonstrates their continuing and valuable commitment to Jersey,’ he said.

Great news if only Flybe would buy planes that do not constantly break down. I fly with them perhaps twice a month and the last 6 trips have either been delayed for 2 hours or cancelled completely. A good airline let down by cheap unreliable aircraft.

The only thing Flybe will be looking towards is more of the tax payers money in subsidies.

D Smedley, their average fleet age 4.5 years, including 13 brand new regional jet aircraft with an average age of 1 year.
I hardly think you can complain about their fleet quality!

I agree with you D smedley an airline who charge far too much and bad service i use to travel with them till they started charging for bags bad enough credit or debit card per journey per person and always delayed with “technical” problem (which can mean anything) in fact last june i flew to dublin with air-lingus and coached up to belfast 103 miles rather than go with their direct flight and the price was much cheaper go with ba or blue islands.

I am very pleased that FlyBe is increasing flights from Birmingham. Wish they would put some day trips in on a saturday for shopping and a day on the beach!!!!

there are cheaper flights available from BA so i hardly consider flybe a cheap airline

In reply to “Jordan”. You have missed the point completely. I never said that the Flybe aircraft were old , what i said was that they are unreliable. The fact, as you point out that their fleet has an average age of 1 year is all the more worrying. Why do they keep breaking down? They have choosen to use aircraft from Bombardier and Embraer which are simply not fit for purpose. This aircraft unreliability issue that Flybe suffers daily has resulted in the airline being commonly referred to as “FlyMaybe”. I fly with BA, BMIbaby regularly and have never yet witnessed a “technical” problem and i have flown with BA for over 30 years! Is this because they use Airbus and Boeing aircraft? No airline is perfect and Flybe could be close to this goal if only they had planes that worked reliably. I feel sorry for the staff and the poor equipment they have to endure.

Fantastic. Even more flights that I can’t afford. Whenever I fly off island, Flybe is by far and away the most expensive airline!
