We have ruined this lovely area

From Stephanie Marchant.
I AM incensed at what the States politicians (so-called) are doing to the one remaining beautiful area near town. I am talking about Havre des Pas.
I live a stone’s throw away from the beach and have been in this area for more than ten years. In that time it has changed to the point of being nearly unrecognisable. The States have passed hotels being changed to housing. They include the once grand Hotel de la Plage, as well as Fort d’Auvergne and the Carlton Hotel.
As we all know, most States Members don’t live in or near town. It is obvious that they don’t care, as the devastation is not on their doorstep. I was really in two minds about voting this year, although, in the end, I did, but only because I come from a family who have always been political. This time I found myself agreeing with my neighbours and others, who said: ‘What’s the point voting? They just make promises and go back on their word once they’re in.’
What really frustrates people is the lack of accountability in Jersey – just look at the fiasco of the incinerator, a carbuncle if ever there was one. I have heard from one States Member that plans for widening Green Street were discussed and passed ages ago. This States Member also said that the incinerator was a foregone conclusion and that it was given the OK two years ago.
I grew up in this area and it was always a well-loved place for locals and holidaymakers alike – remember them? It is an absolute travesty what these States Members have been able to inflict on this beautiful area. As I walk along the promenade, it is not an exaggeration to say that it almost makes me want to cry.

Stephanie – I agree with you. it is beyond belief that the States of Jersey are willing to condone the destruction of the natural beauty of the Havre-des-Pas coastline with little or no thought to the inhabitants human or otherwise. As far as I am aware, throughout history, tourists generally like to enjoy holidays where there is a view of the sea. Havre-des-Pas has this to offer in abundance.

Yes Stephanie I to agree with you (See my letter re the siting of the new incinerator)
The thing that concerns me about the redevelopment of the Hotels and the Fort into luxury flat properties is that I wonder if all of a sudden some mysterious ancient seashore property rights are going to be discovered by developer’s lawyers leading to the closure of the Promenade to the general public and the etablishment of exclusive seashore access? It happened further along the Coast to the East with another former Hotel site(Watch this space)
I personally have never liked the La Plage Hotel building, although it’s attraction as a Hotel was that the public did at least have access to it and the beach and Promenade beyond. However I believe its height and over-bearing presence from the landside is wholly wrong. And it blocks the natural light and sea vista of a whole area of the town behind it. I believe an opportunity was missed, when it failed as a Hotel, to compulsorily purchase it and redevelop the site on a more human scale in line with the older architecture further along opposite the Seapool. This would have allowed small businesses and Restaurants access to a prime seafront location and would have opened up the bay so that people who do not know the Island don’t just pass by oblivious to it’s existence. It would also have really rejuvenated the Promenade and encouraged better development of the area of town on the landside behind it, a sort of 1920s/30s slightly Bohemian look and atmosphere.
Only Jersey could have allowed some of the ghastly sixties development that has replaced the genuine article in that area.
