HD told: Sail all year or not at all

Assistant Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean has said that it was unfair that Condor continued to operate throughout the year when HD Ferries would often pull out during less profitable times.

But HD spokesman Phil Jones said that if HD Ferries were to resume a Jersey service — a decision that has not been made yet — they would not operate unless they could make money out of their routes. The troubled ferry company had a series of problems with its vessel HD1 last year and had to cancel several sailings in order to carry out repair work.

Deputy Maclean, who is likely to run for Economic Development Minister in tomorrow’s ministerial elections, said: ‘For the last two years, HD Ferries have said that they would operate a year-round service but pulled out in the winter — a less profitable period.

why don’t the states subsidise HD? it isn’t practical to only have one ferry service who charge the earth.

What a lot people do not relise is that Condor’s charges reflect a service that is carried out all year round. HD maybe a lot cheaper when they operate but at those prices can only do it during busy periods.

It wouldn’t be fair to subsidise HD and not Condor – if Condor charge the earth it’s because they have to be able to get through the unprofitable periods. If HD run a cheaper service and then back out of the unprofitable times of year then either their business model is wrong (if they intended to run for a year) or they are being allowed to Cherrypick, making Condor look bad.

Before HD it was nearly impossible to book affordable weekend trip to France in the summer. Increased competition gave more seats to St Malo and I could book holiday with only few days notice.

We all need a break sometimes and I hope HD will be back, even if it is only for the summer season. Cheaper prices for all please!
