The day Liz took on the world darts champion
Wednesday 10th December 2008, 2:59PM GMT.
JERSEY’S Liz Drew has gone head to head with Russian female darts sensation and world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova at the Winmau World Darts Masters in Bridlington.
Drew (pictured) was given a bye to the second round after her first round opponent, the Italian ladies’ champion, failed to show. Pitched against the 24-year-old professional darts player, who this week announced that she will become only the second female ever to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship, Drew said she was not expecting to cause an upset.
However, she said that despite being beaten 4-0 she enjoyed every minute of the match. She said: ‘I couldn’t believe that this was the first time I had ever been to an event like this, and the first person I was up against was the World No. 1! How unlucky is that!
‘I think I played okay – I was completely outclassed by her, but I loved every minute of it, and she was a really nice girl. It was a bit disappointing that I didn’t get to play the Italian, as I might have had a reasonable chance of taking a game or two, but the whole experience was great – and now I can say I have played against the world No. 1!’
The tournament – one of the longest-running professional darts championships, which has been won previously by Eric Bristow, Phil Taylor and Andy Fordham – proved tough competition for the Jersey contingent, who included Kenny Horton, Phil Speak and Dave and Steve Eusebini.
