Wherry to lead Oxford’s 125th Varsity match bid
Saturday 13th December 2008, 9:59AM GMT.
JERSEYMAN Tom Wherry will wear the captain’s armband for Oxford in the 125th annual Varsity football match against Cambridge in March.
The 21-year-old Grouville Football Club utility player – a former Island under-18 captain – was awarded his Oxford Full Blue last year when he featured in their 5-3 Varsity match defeat by Cambridge at Fulham Football Club’s Craven Cottage ground in London.
The match, a curtain raiser to the annual Varsity Boat race on the River Thames, went down as possibly one of the greatest Varsity matches ever, after Oxford three times came from behind before being beaten at the death.
Wherry, who is undertaking experimental psychology at Lady Margaret Hall College, said: ‘I’ve been captain all season but it will be a little different against Cambridge because it is the 125th Varsity match.
‘The captain is voted by players who have a Blue; it’s called a Blue vote and it turned out to me and, obviously, I was delighted to be chosen.
