An inspiration to gardeners

A GREEN-fingered Islander has had her garden featured in an influential book about the world’s most inspirational gardens.
Judith Quérée’s garden at her St Ouen home features in this year’s Inspirational Gardens which was published by the AA at the end of October.
The book features gardens of all shapes, sizes and styles from around the world and gives details of how the gardens can be visited.
Mrs Quérée is a professional gardener who spends from March to October every year working on her garden and she is excited by the prospect of having her quarter-acre garden seen by people across the world.
‘I was stunned because it’s world gardens. Mine is the only Jersey garden and it’s just fantastic,’ she said.
The garden, which is completely organic, has many different areas and habitats, including a bog garden with over 60 water loving irises which is fed by natural underground springs and is accessed by an elevated walkway.
The bog is shown in the book along with various other photos of the rare and unusual plants that give Mrs Quérée’s garden that ‘quirky’ feel.
‘In the book there is a picture of the house, the walkways over the bog, and one of the scarecrows,’ said Mrs Quérée. ‘There are also some of the views through the garden. The write up explains what is in the garden and is very complementary and very enthusiastic. I have been told it is one of the best write-ups in the book.’
She and her garden are not new to publicity as they have featured on television programmes throughout Europe and are due to appear in the magazine, Country Living, next summer.
Mrs Quérée also came second in the BBC TV gardener of the year in 2000 and received a bronze medal at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in 2006 for a garden based on a fisherman’s cottage at L’Etacq, St Ouen.
