YOUNGSTERS from St Saviour’s School made the most of the new £125,000 skate park which opened on Monday at the New North Quay.

Children on bikes, skateboards and in-line skates can now enjoy the purpose-built facility that was opened by Deputy Ben Fox and Jake Hipwell, the president of the Channel Islands Skateboard Association.

There are ramps of all shapes and sizes for the skaters to practise their skills on, but Mr Hipwell said it had taken years of campaigning and a degree of compromise to get the park opened. But he added that improvements, such as getting a bowl shape and more ramps, could be a possibility in the future.

He added: ‘We will be working on that with Education, Sport and Culture. I am so pleased that kids have somewhere to go.’

The skate park was funded by the Waterfront Enterprise Board, whose managing director, Stephen Izatt, was at the opening ceremony to see the park finally opened. He said: ‘This has been a long time coming but it’s a great facility for the children of the Island.’
