Hang on in there on the path of democracy

From Alison Vautier.
HOW refreshing to see a wind of change blowing through Sark, blowing before it 500 years of unique individualism and Island tradition.
At last Sark residents can move along the path of democracy, choose their own government without hindrance, their own representatives without feeling pressured, and feel comfortable that they have attained full use of their ‘human rights’; such a useful tool.
In years past the feudal lord was never challenged – after all, most of the surrounding men and woman depended on him for their livelihood. One word of dissension and they were out of a job, and possibly out on the street. Bad old feudalism – thank goodness that’s all over, then! No chance of that happening in the new, free and democratic society.
How true the old maxim that no matter how long, how expensive, or how powerful the stick you use to beat the horse with, although you can lead him to water, still he will not drink. I hope that the residents of Sark will place their caps firmly on their head, not in their hand.
My money is on the horse. Hang on in there!
