Lower prices? Unlikely

From Jeff Le Caudey.
RECENTLY the Jersey Consumer Council’s Newsletter gave comparative prices of food and general goods in three local supermarkets, Tesco and three other UK outlets.

As Tesco has been named as likely to throw their hat into the Island ring, I did a rough calculation based on buying ten random products.

At first glance Tesco’s UK prices appeared to be the lowest by a margin of a little over £1. However, bearing in mind the Co-op’s twice-weekly double-divi days of 8% (4% the rest of the week), they won the day by over 50 pence. Not a lot, perhaps. However, if you add the GST to Tesco’s figure, the Co-op come up as the overall winners.

So, can Tesco arriving here, requiring large amounts of space, and radically lower prices? Most unlikely! Also we must bear in mind that the Co-op insist on always buying local produce when possible – at a fair price.

To be fair also, if you are over a certain age and can make it to Safeway on the one day each month when there is 10% off, their prices can be similar to those of the Co-op.
