Unhealthy Jersey
Friday 19th December 2008, 3:00PM GMT.
THE shocking state of Islanders’ health has today been revealed in a major social survey suggesting that the get-fit message is still not getting through.
The report, which will be presented to the States early next year, shows that Jersey residents are suffering an increasing number of severe illnesses, drink too much alcohol and fail to get enough exercise or eat enough fruit and vegetables.
Today Rosemary Geller, the Medical Officer of Health, told the JEP: ‘We do have a problem, and it is a problem caused by our lifestyle choices. During the last 30 years our lifestyles have deteriorated – we are drinking more, eating more junk food and not getting enough exercise – and we are now starting to see the effects of this.
‘Jersey is in a different league to most other places when it comes to alcohol consumption, but the rest of the problems highlighted in the survey are being experienced in many other countries in western Europe. We need to make major lifestyle changes if we want to tackle this increasing problem.’

Blimey! and i thought i was in bad shape!
Maybe its time to get the Fort Regent back to its former glory of the 1970,s and get the Adults and kids running around so that the obesity levels will drop.Funny thing is most of us eat “healthy” for example low fat food skimmed milk and so on yet people have ballooned. We ate largely unhealthy food in the 1970,s yet there wasnt the obesity problem that is appartent at present levels, hence bring back the fort and the chips!

What is healthy? Do we eat to live or live to eat?
If the meaning of ‘life the universe and everything’ is a bean count of the years lived, irrespective of quality of life, we all have a problem. A philosophical problem.
Ponder; almost half of all healthcare is expended in the last six months of life. Why? Because that is when we are about to die.

Merry christmas to you to!

I would say i’m healthy – but at a cost. Grabbing some lunch: A salad box £4 vs chips £1.50. The gym costs £57 joining fee and 34 a month! Not to mention the cost of a personal trainer if you want to know the right exercises to be doing! Buying fresh fruit and vegetables proves to be costly also.
Maybe we should get rid of places like KFC Teach about obesity and risk of diseases at school. Obviously no ones going to listen at christmas; but the new year could be a new start for many people – as long as they get the support they need.

Having only been on Jersey for a while it is very obvious that your healthy foods are way more expensive than your unhealthy foods. I don’t doubt that there will be people who simply cannot afford to eat healthily!
As for joining gyms and the like… why don’t people just go for a brisk walk at night (or morning or lunch), that’s what I tend to do. A fast 30 minute walk every night is fine as long as you’re not overeating at the same time.

A salad box may be more expensive than chips. But you could prepare yourself a salad at home – I make pasta and veg/tomato sauce for lunch and comes in around £1.50 per day.
It’s not hard if you choose to be organised.
