What mood for change?

From Bruce Willing.
IT appears that Deputy Southern wishes to adopt a ‘Barclay’ approach to democracy – only if it fits his purpose and personal ambition. We have just been through an extended electoral process and I see no evidence of a ‘public mood for change and reform’. On the contrary; we have just had a very low turnout, presumably because the majority are happy with what they have now.
We have new faces in the States. Let us welcome them, see how they get on and then decide in three years’ time whether they should continue to represent us. That is democracy and it has been exemplified in the States through the voting process for the selection of ministers and scrutiny panels.
It is surely no coincidence that the only person in the protesting group to be voted into office on a scrutiny panel has already proved that he is a capable person in his first career, both as a civil servant and as the organiser of one of the Island’s largest annual events.
A functional, professional approach to government is needed, particularly at this time. Squeaking protest does nothing for the credibility of the rest of this group.

I agree, what change? Geoff Southern has been out of sorts with most of the people living here ever since he arrived. I watched him at the hustings rudely shaking his head every time somebody spoke sense which he didn’t understand. I find him rude.

Deputy Southern would top the poll when it comes to bullying 21 year olds.

How come Geoff Southern is so convinced the Island wants his style of politics anyway? The JDA may mean well but their presentation is far too aggressive for my liking and I like the people they hate.

While I am not sure that Geoff Southern and the JDA represent the future of change for Jersey.
I reckon that for every person sitting on their hands and not voting because they are happy with the present leadership there is at least one who does not vote because they find all the candidates equally unappealing.
Terry le Sueur and his CoM commands a small majority amongst the people who vote, outside that self selecting group there are plenty who view his policies with deep suspicion.
If his policies start to go wrong and the island gets into trouble then there are plenty who will be heading for the door while they can.
