Herbert stars in England triumph

JERSEY’S Beckie Herbert played a major role in England winning the Tri Nations Indoor Hockey tournament at Eastleigh, Hampshire, over the weekend.
Herbert, a regular England and Great Britain outdoor international, won her first indoor caps – and helped herself to four goals as England pipped Australia and Scotland to top spot in the round-robin event.
Herbert topped the England scoring list with Sally Walton and was joint second overall in the tournament. Herbert netted twice as England got off to a great start with an opening 5-4 victory over Australia on Friday night, registering her goals in the sixth minute – sending the ball through the legs of the Aussies’ goalkeeper – and 16th minute, firing the latter in from the top of the circle to give England a 3-1 lead.
Herbert, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in 2006, also scored in the return match with Australia on Saturday, but this time it was a late consolation as the scoreline was reversed.
