House break-ins reach new high
Monday 22nd December 2008, 2:59PM GMT.
THE number of house burglaries in Jersey has rocketed to its highest level in years, it has been revealed.
Figures released to the JEP show that 181 homes were broken into between January and November this year.
It represents a 12 per cent increase on the 161 house break-ins committed in the whole of last year, and is 18 per cent higher than the three-year average of 153 burglaries annually. The spate of break-ins began in late spring and peaked in October when 30 domestic burglaries were recorded in just four weeks.
During the last year, States police have increased efforts to target known offenders and during the last three months have charged seven suspects in connection with a total of nine burglaries. Today police urged Islanders to start locking doors and windows, revealing that in 60 per cent of cases this year the offender simply walked into the victim’s home.
