All smiles after ‘Freezing Bottoms’ victory in Carteret
Tuesday 23rd December 2008, 2:59PM GMT.
A JERSEY Rowing Club ladies team had outstanding success in the annual Les Culs Geleés ‘Freezing Bottoms’ race in Carteret over the weekend.
Having won the Gorey-Carteret race earlier this year, the Aztec ladies crew of Sarah Medland, Kiley Tréhorel-Daly and Stephanie Galliene (of Carteret Rowing Club), assisted by novice rower Heidi Le Miere, and coxed by Mic Tréhorel, were made to work hard for their success … even before joining up with 120 competitors from across France.
A frantic dash from St Helier, in stomach-churning seas, which included a kit change en route, had the rolling boat in Carteret just minutes before the start. The Aztec crew, now seated in their racing craft, worked their way through the crowded mixed field, reaching the front of the pack as they headed out of the sheltered estuary into open and extremely heavy seas.
The constant wind had built up a large swell the like of which the Aztec ladies had not competed in before, though the organisers were confident that competitors would cope.
