What about aid for us?

Tuesday 23rd December 2008, 3:00PM GMT.

From Judith Egré.
WHILE I have heartfelt sympathy with those in Sark who are suffering as a result of the despicable actions of the Barclay brothers and their agent, I learn today that our new Chief Minister has had talks with the Guernsey government over action plans to ‘rescue’ those most affected in a way yet to be determined but not ruling out financial aid.

How is their desperate plight different from so many of our residents affected by the Landsbanki debacle? Why have our combined governments not seen fit to react in a similar way to our problems? I feel gutted!
In the current economic climate we cannot be sure of so many things, including employment.

Our savings could have been the buffer we might need in months to come. I am fully supportive of giving aid to our neighbouring islanders but why is this help not forthcoming from the Jersey States for its own residents?

The difference being that the Sark residents were victims of someone else’s greed rather than their own.
9 per cent interest anyone ?

I agree with Spring Heeled Jack. Why didn’t these people just bank with bigger more secure banks?

The people of Sark have my sympathy,
But people who chase after money to maximise profit, have only themselves to blame when things go wrong, greed deserves to be punished.
