Tourism fears a drop in full-price bookings

0599963_2_cropped.jpgTHE tourism industry will be holding its collective breath in the first two months of 2009 amid fears that full-price booking levels could be well below the levels of past years.

The industry needs potential tourists to be prepared to pay advertised prices in the crucial months of January and February if a financial crisis is to be averted. And taxpayers’ money will be used to boost visitor numbers if it looks as though tourist numbers will be down sharply.

Many key figures in the industry are privately predicting that hotels and guest houses will slash rates as early as March to attract enough tourists to keep businesses viable. And one well-known industry figure, who declined to be publicly named, said: ‘It will be meltdown in some areas if high-value booking numbers drop as much as some people fear.’

However, the Christmas and New Year period appears to have been reasonable, with hotels reporting decent occupancy levels compared to previous years. But with the UK economy predicted to be spiralling into a deep recession early in 2009, the prospects for next year are worrying many people.

This cannot be any real surprise to anyone. It has been blatantly obvious for sometime. As I have said before there has been no real investment for years coupled with a lack of a finite image. Again too little too late.

Example. 10 days in Turkey, 4* hotel half board, flights and transfers – £300. I doubt you could fly here for that! Oh and pretty guaranteed weather. And this is the case in most short haul destinations.

Jersey has much to offer and I hope at this ‘Brainstorming’ session some positive action is taken. A shrug of the shoulders whilst saying ‘I dont know where the tourists are?’ wont rectify the situation.

Hardly suprising. In times of recession holiday makers want value for money. Jersey couldn’t offer value for money even before recession.

But how can this be? The First Minister has said there is no recession on the Island.

Good comment but, I think you will find that what the First Minister said was that he would have difficulty seeing a recession. Hence the questioning as to how he could possibly say one wasnt coming if he didnt know what to look for.!!
He should try walking the main Strees of St Helier…there are a few clues along the way.
