A gathering of the clans?
Friday 2nd January 2009, 2:59PM GMT.
THIS grand occasion has posed a few questions for us here at Temps Passé. The picture was found by Christopher Brough during a recent house move.
It was probably taken in the late 1930s, and does feature a few family members, but he is not sure what the occasion would have been. ‘I think it would have been an occasion for the Rotary Club or the Jersey Scottish Society,’ he said. Mr Brough’s reasoning is that his grandfather, Will-iam Hume Brough, was at some point president of both organisations. To complicate matters, Mr Brough cannot find his grandfather in the photograph.
He has, however, identified his late mother, Joyce Brough (middle row, sixth from right), who is leaning over his grandmother, Jane Youlton Hunkin. Mr Brough said that his grandmother’s name was Moorman, and, at the time, there may have been a number of people in the Island with that family name.
Brough itself was a well-known name in the Island, and the family for many years ran the drapery shop Brough’s, in King Street, which was next door to Briggs, a general store selling everything from toys to clothes. Both shops were on the site which now houses Marks & Spencer.
Mr Brough has also identified the then manager of the Forum cinema, Edward O’Henry (middle row, second right), and his wife Kathleen (front row, second right). He thinks that the couple’s daughter Maureen may be the girl in a light dress to the left of Kathleen.
If you have any information about the occasion or can identify others in the photograph, please contact Temps Passé on 611755 or by e-mail at features@jerseyeveningpost.com.
