The Jersey star and former Beaulieu Convent student has another busy year ahead of her with three championship titles to defend together with representing England. Cann begins the year looking to win her fourth English National Championship title in five years, at the Manchester Velodrome, later this month.

The 29-year-old said: ‘I was pleased with 2008 with three titles but obviously disappointed not to have made the Olympics in Beijing. Unfortunately I had a significant injury during the season and that affected my chances but looking back I did get closer to selection than I expected following the injury.

‘I’m looking forward to defending the National title in Manchester in a few weeks’ time and with an increase in prize money this year there is an added incentive to win the title again. It’s fantastic that the prize money has been increased to the same as the men [by £400 to £1,200] and I know I’ll have to be at the top of my game to do well because when you are champion everyone is out to beat you.’
