THE plight of the Woolworths staff shows Jersey up again for not regulating to protect its own people.

Some argue that Deloitte are simply working within local law (or the lack of it). However, according to a BBC report, the fact that there would be no redundancy pay was only conveyed to the staff after the shop finally closed for the last time.

That reads as a spiteful act of astonishing meanness. That wasn’t ‘working within local law’, that was exploiting it. To milk the staff of all loyalty right up to the last moment, and then tell them that, was more akin to the action of pin-striped spivs. Given that Deloitte have an office over here, one might have expected more care for their good name.

No words of mine could ever trash their reputation as effectively as they have just done. Would the faceless wonder who made that decision like to stand up and publicly explain themselves? Would Deloitte treat their own staff in this appalling manner? I suspect not. The only thing we can do is express our disgust to Deloitte.

Finally, a memo to Deloitte: Jersey residents are not second-class objects.
