Battle of Jersey commemoration

MORE than 50 people traced the footsteps of Major Francis Peirson on Saturday to commemorate the 228th anniversary of the Battle of Jersey.
The walkers, led by historian Frank Falle, marched from St Peter, where Major Peirson was garrisoned, to the Parade and on to the Royal Square. Blue Badge guide Paul Nicolle then gave a talk about the battle, and members of the 1781 Jersey Militia fired off volleys of musket.
St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft later hosted a meal at the Town Hall. Mr Falle said: ‘I think everyone who took part thought that it was an enjoyable event. The talk by Paul was especially good and very informative.’
The event was designed to give a graphic account of the battle, which took place on 6 January 1781. Major Peirson, who was aged only 24 at the time, led the troops of the 95th Regiment of Foot into town on the day of the battle. His force, combined with the 83rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Glasgow Volunteers), 78th Highlanders and soldiers from the Jersey Militia easily defeated the French. However, Major Peirson died in the battle. It is believed he was buried in the Town Church.
