‘Share information so that we can help’
Monday 12th January 2009, 2:59PM GMT.
PARISHES are losing touch with residents on Income Support because Social Security will not share information with parish halls, according to one parish Constable.
Grouville Constable Dan Murphy (pictured) believes that the department, which runs the under-fire Income Support system, will not co-operate with the parishes to help claimants.
And he says that if Social Security would share information, then his staff could take up some of the community visit work that the department has been criticised for dropping.
Mr Murphy’s comments follow the release of a draft report written by Parish of St Helier staff that slated Income Support for failing to protect the vulnerable, and failing to prevent overspends. Mr Murphy said that with more co-operation with the parishes who used to run welfare benefits, the £64 million system would be more effective.

Perhaps tax payers could be asked to police some of the people who are in receipt of low-income support and such like, it is frustrating to note that whilst a tax payer like myself cannot afford Blackberries, Satelite TV and Active cards, I note with interest that a small minority have managed to use loop holes to gain. I am not saying that all people who receive income support take advantage, but there is always a very small minority who spoil things for everyone else, I just hope they use their expensive lap tops to log on and read this comment.
