BIRD WATCH 2012

The 11th Great Garden Bird Watch took place over the weekend, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February. JEP readers were asked to get on board to help monitor bird life in the Island.
One colder mid-winter in Jersey means global warming is a myth? That’ll restore the 10m a year that the glaciers in the Alps have been receding for the past two decades then, won’t it? It is the average temperature of the globe that is increasing, not to be confused with it increasing or decreasing in one small corner of it. If the increased meltwater from the Arctic stops the Gulf Stream it could bring a temporary mini Ice Age to Western Europe (winter conditions like those currently experienced on the North American eastern seaboard). Imagine what Mr Hargreaves would make of that! But ultimately the planet as a whole would still be burning up. It is climate chaos, it is accelerated (and may be purely caused) by mankind’s activities, it is too late to do anything about it.

The only way to get an idea about global climate change is to look at 50 or longer year averages.
One cold snap does not rubbish the theory nor is an abnormally hot summer proof that we are heading for tropical conditions.
Indubitally pumping more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will affect the climate. But by the time catastrophic change is under way it will be far too late to stop it and around 2100 people will be looking back at our climatic conditions with amazement.
