Charity chairman faces calls to resign
Thursday 15th January 2009, 2:58PM GMT.
CALLS for the chairman of the Family Nursing and Home Care charity to resign were made during a stormy meeting at the Town Hall last night.
The calls were made at a special general meeting arranged by supporters of the suspended chief executive, Karen Huchet, attended by well over 100 members of the charity. A number of speakers called for chairman Richard Pirouet to either resign or stand down until an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspension has been completed.
There were complaints that the process was taking too long, as Ms Huchet has been suspended for over five months.
Many members expressed their clear frustration that the committee running the charity were unable to comment at last night’s meeting on the details of the allegations against the suspended chief executive for legal reasons.
The meeting began with Mr Pirouet making a statement that set the tone. He said that while the association’s internal process was ongoing it was ‘wholly inappropriate and unfair to all concerned’ for the association and/or any committee members to comment. ‘The committee is satisfied that the association is conducting itself in an appropriate manner to ensure best practice in the work place,’ he said.

Investigations take as long as they need to take. Being suspended on full pay does not make an organisation drag its heals to delay the process, I am sure all the staff at FN&HC wish for an outcome – without a mob mentality and in a fair and processed manner.

I attended the meeting and the main concern seemed to be the cost of this investigation to the Charity and the effect on Mrs Huchet. Also concerns were expressed that someone who has dedicated 23 years of her life to service within FN&HC does not know the details of the allegation against her; this would not seem to indicate either a fair or ‘processed’ manner. Being suspended on full pay will not compensate Mrs Huchet for any reputational damage and I am sure she would also like to see this come to a speedy conclusion.

If an investigation is taking this long one should take faith that it is being completed correctly with no corners being cut or left unturned.
Ms Huchet is suspended on full pay and unlike the majority of persons that are put into this situation Ms Huchet can afford to pay for lawyers to fight on her behalf.
