‘Continuing growth will spell disaster’
Thursday 15th January 2009, 2:56PM GMT.
PROMINENT environmental and business campaigners have written to all States Members to urge them to make sure that the next three years sees sustainable public policy.
The group of 13 Islanders, which includes environmentalist Mike Stentiford and former Chamber of Commerce president Kevin Keen, have written to each of the 53 States Members.
Spokesman Chris Perkins, an environmental campaigner who stood for Senator last year, said: ‘We have an economy at the moment which works on growth which is about making more and more |– and the planet just cannot sustain that. Anyone who looks at it in a rational way will see that, whether you are a business person or not.’
The writers have asked Members to consider sustainability questions raised in the scientific journal New Scientist, including questions about whether economic and population growth is sustainable, and whether the limited nature of the planet’s resources is taken into account by governments and economists.
• The letter is signed by David Cabeldu, Pete Double, André Ferrari, Dr Mark Forskitt, Sue Hardy, Jim Hopley, Kevin Keen, Cyd Le Bail (pictured), Nick Palmer, Chris Perkins, Mike Stentiford, Peter Surcouf and David Warr.

This letter will have no effect at all.
There are a few States’ members who realise that the island has a limit on how many people can live here but they have no say in the government at all.
There is a large proportion who are elected purely on parish issues, they have nothing to say about the world supply of oil, indium or any similar issue.
They certainly do not understand that the island’s water supply is probably the most inmportant limiting factor to population growth. The next time we have a water supply crisis they will be off looking for underground rivers from France again!
Finally we have the people in charge and to be blunt a lot of them view three years as long term.
Even if they were willing to frame a long term policy it would be impossible due to the crazy way Jersey government is structured.
There is no central policy making at all! Each Minister is a law unto themselves and their department.
Jersey has always has a light government model because that is all that was possible. As long as good luck is more important than good judgement the island has muddled through.
If the island hit a crisis the island ‘bus’ would come off the road at the first corner!
