If you think Jersey’s bad, take a look at Guernsey

From Bruce Willing.
THE latest edition of Business Brief magazine makes a feature of ‘The State of Guernsey’. Is it true that Guernsey has:
• Bought an airline at a time when global airlines are struggling to remain profitable, an airline that, unsurprisingly, is running at a loss? (Last year of over £2 million.)
• A bill for a new runway estimated at £167 million?
• Thus no capacity to land jet aircraft, inhibiting its tourism sector just as the pound’s value against the euro encourages the expansion of island tourism.
• No means of disposing of its rubbish other than in a fast-filling land site?
lInadequate sewage disposal that routinely pours raw sewage into the sea?
• A fuel port built in a tidal harbour and, as a result, the need to buy the tanker fleet to supply it?
• A commitment to drawing down its strategic reserve in support of government expenditure (last year less than planned at only £8 million) as it has decided not to introduce a consumer-based tax?
And people complain about Jersey! We are indeed fortunate that Jersey has committed to maintaining and improving its infrastructure and has the financial strategies to do so. Let us hope that our politicians can recognise (and be recognised for) what they have achieved for us and continue to move Jersey forwards.
