Paedophile ‘free to roam the streets’

Saturday 17th January 2009, 10:00AM GMT.

00611838_cropped.jpgTWO sisters who were sexually abused by their father – a predatory paedophile who targeted young girls for more than three decades – have called for action to protect the community before he strikes again

The sisters, who cannot be named for legal reasons, say that they are shocked and disgusted that he has been released from jail after serving a second lengthy term for sex crimes and yet no one is monitoring him. And they believe that parents and schools should be warned that he could once again be on the prowl for young victims.

One of the sisters, who are now adults, said: ‘He is not being watched and is free to roam the streets. He is free to do what he likes. I know him and he will reoffend. ‘If someone like that is walking the streets, people have got a right to know. He used to come and hang around school gates. I have a family and I will warn my school and other schools that he could be hanging around. I think people in Jersey have got a right to know.’

The sisters say that the authorities seem powerless to protect them, their families and the community at large because their father has to agree to be monitored before the police or Probation can act.

Surely someone with his past record shouldn’t have to agree to be monitered it should be compulsory to do so for the safety of island children.

Allow the publication of lists of names and details but only for repeat offenders.

    First time offenders need supervision.

Lack of supervision leads to vigilante attacks by victims and relatives.

If you are worried about a sex offender you can speak to the person who is supervising them and express your concerns. If you see a sex offender repeatedly by a school and he repeatedly approaches your child and you have no one to tell. You may resort to vigilante behaviour.

I am not sure if I would !and that is scary !

How noble of the two victims to go public and alert the people of Jersey of the evil that may be lurking in our parks and at our school gates.

I certainly do not beleive in people taking the law into their own hands or lynch mobs and the like, however there may be those within our society that do.

For the sake of the victims of abuse and indeed the abusers themselves, in a civilised society such as Jersey suitable laws should be in place to protect all citizens.

Our politicians need to prioritise what is important to the electorate, it appears that each week we learn of gaps in our social policy that are simply unacceptable.

There appears to be no haste in the machinery of government in dealing with these issues for example the lack of a Depositer Protection Act or a fully functioning Employemnt Law to name but two.

Sixty percent of the electorate failed to caste their vote in last years elections, we have a very parlous state of democracy in Jersey.

In my opinion people fail to understand the link between their vote and subsequent social policy and as is oft quoted ‘we get the government we deserve’.

Why dont the States just adopt the U.K. Sex Register and the U.K. legislation that covers the supervision of sex offenders…….I can just here those xenophobes now saying, “But this is Jersey; we are different…we can do it better.” The thing is the social legislation, that is needed to keep people safe and secure in the Island, always takes ages to come in because of this stupid attitude. In many cases it would be easier and cheaper, just to adopt the U.K. law, with any little amendments that may be required to suit local needs. But then i guess we always have to keep ‘jobs for the boys’.

There are I believe, no checks on the crimminal records of people arriving in this island from elsewhere. How many crimminals are arriving here – from court reports in the JEP quite a few

It is absolutelt ridiculous that a sex offender can be released on “not agree to be monitored”. He should not be given the choice!
Or, the choice should be either be monitored or stay in jail!
