Players and others nearby battled to save him, and St Peter player Jonathan Trigg gave Mr Lee, who was playing for St John’s Football Club against St Peter, mouth-to -mouth resuscitation before paramedics took over.

However, despite all of the efforts to save him, Mr Lee, a detective constable, died later at the General Hospital. The game was immediately abandoned when Mr Lee collapsed, and, as a mark of respect, all of St John’s fixtures were postponed yesterday.

Mr Lee was the former manager of the St John women’s football team and led them to their victory in winning the Upton Cup several years ago. He also managed St John’s third team in the C Division. Mr Lee was also a very experienced and successful long-distance runner who was a popular member of the Jersey Spartan Athletic Club.

The son of Ron and Margaret Lee, of St Clement, Mr Lee was the father of two boys and brother to Brenton (Bomber).
