Take health and safety seriously, firms urged

BUSINESSES in Jersey are being urged to take health and safety seriously.
Following the recent release of the Health and Safety at Work 2007 report, the Island’s Health and Safety Inspectorate have warned that firms cannot afford to simply dismiss it as ‘elf and safety’.
The director of health and safety, Colin Myers (pictured), said that although the report shows a drop in the number of accidents occurring at work, Jersey has nothing to be complacent about.
‘Accidents have gone down from 1,155 to 974 which is good news,’ he said, ‘but the report shows that 22,000 working days were still lost in 2007, and that is significant.

Yes..I have personally been privy to the cavalier attitude of a large employer towards Health and Safety issues which I am now having to fight/resolve through the JET. It would appear that this issue takes low priority in some companies, due to the laws being more lax here than in the UK.

I agree that the majority of companies take H&S less serious than they should. Especially in office based firms such as Finance where work related ill health are much more relevant than accident risk but are largely ignored. Look at your lost days stats………and see how much that cost you.
