Chamber ‘wish list’ calls for States focus on jobs

The proposal is included in a ‘wish list’ that the Jersey Chamber of Commerce want politicians to act on this year. The 2009 States strategic plan has not yet been finalised, but Chamber president Clive Spears said that members thought it was a good idea to put their views forward in advance, given the economic climate.

Mr Spears said the true impact of the global recession had not yet been felt in the Island, but that most commentators now agreed that Jersey would not be immune. In addition to reviewing capital projects, Chamber members said that there should be a new fast-track planning procedure for projects ‘of key economic value’. This should ensure that where investment is made available, it will find its way into the economy as soon as possible, and with regard for local jobs.

Another proposal – one which has already been put forward by small businesses – is that the States should put in place a ‘prompt payment code’. This, they say, would act as an example to others and would help to keep cash flows from drying up.
