‘We must maintain what we have’

Saturday 24th January 2009, 10:00AM GMT.

00005162_cropped.jpgECONOMIC Development Minister Alan Maclean says that he did not know the axe was about to fall on the Heathrow route when he was touting its success at the Senatorial hustings.

And the minister says that in the current economic climate, his department’s efforts are going to be put into maintaining existing routes, not adding new ones.

Senator Maclean again refused to disclose the subsidy that bmi received from the States for running the service – he has previously refused applications by the Jersey Evening Post under the code of practice on public access to official information.

Facing questions from States Members about the cancellation of scheduled air links, he said: ‘The department learned about a week before (about the Heathrow cancellation). The subsidy issue has been aired on many occasions. It is not a figure that I am prepared to release. It was an arrangement made in commercial confidence and I believe that it should remain that way, so that we can get the best deal possible for the taxpayer.’

Ok, so we were ripped off, either by our politicians or BMI. BMI have gone so they won’t do it again that leaves just who? It all just so predictable and of course, private….

So why are BMI now advertising a brand new route to Ukraine from Heathrow… I bet its using OUR slot that the taxpayers paid for.

The figure of the funding was in excess of £500,000 per year to BMI.

What ripoff? – presumably we subsidised them whilst they offered the service, therefore when they stop the service (because it wasn’t profitable enough, because we the public didn’t fly it) we stop the subsidy. This saves money.

They tried, it failed. Move on – they have.

The problem with Alan Maclean is that he know nothing about the airline business. BMI were slot sitting – everyone in the industry knew. All he has done with his payoffs to both BMI and Easyjet is angered the likes of BA and Flybe which provide decent and frequent year round services to london. The diluted London traffic has resulted in BA for example now only doing 3 flights a day during the winter. If he is not careful we will see BA pull out.

Get someone in to run the Airport that knows how island economics work and more importantly knows how the airline industry works.
