A POIGNANT memorial service was held yesterday for those Islanders who lost their lives during the Holocaust.

Held to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, the service, in the Occupation Tapestry Galley of the Maritime Museum, reflected the national theme for the occasion and Islanders were urged to Stand Up To Hatred.

In their addresses, the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, and the Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Bob Key, both spoke about the need to learn the lessons of history and of the importance of standing up to racism, hatred and persecution.

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on the date when the camps at Auschwitz were liberated in 1945 and this year, as is tradition, wreaths were laid on behalf of all walks of Jersey life to remember all the victims of the Holocaust.
