Multi-million-pound rescue plan for the building trade revealed

ew__00534294_3_cropped.jpgDETAILS of a multi-million-pound rescue package to keep Island builders in work during the economic slowdown have been revealed.

Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf said that a whole raft of major States social housing projects could be started years ahead of schedule. Senator Ozouf has been working with the Housing Minister to identify sites where development or refurbishment projects could be started as early as this year.

Those sites include Salisbury Crescent, opposite Co-op Grand Marché, Le Squez, Lesquende, which is close to the Airport, Clos des Quennevais, Le Geyt Flats and La Carrière, in Grands Vaux. If the works do go ahead, they could be an unexpected benefit of the credit crunch for those waiting for a States home.
There may also be some good news for the taxpayer. ‘We can get good value for money by getting the work done in a depressed market,’ the Treasury Minister said.

Senator Le Main said that cash raised from the sale of publicly-owned property was already in the States coffers to pay for the works, and so no borrowing was needed. ‘We are happy to put these forward immediately to put some work back into the economy on the basis that we have been very successful in selling property off for housing and we now have the money,’ the Housing Minister said.

Begs the question, Who’s going to be able to afford the ‘Public’ (That means the collatral of the population dosen’t it?) buildings? sounds a bit like seling the kettle to buy a suacepan.
Or the crooks omlette, steal an egg, borrow a frying pan, and get someone else to cook it.

Can we build that lift to Fort Regent from Snow Hill with those builders ?

We would then have a new park in town, really soon.

It would be cheaper than the bath street park and therefore I believe a good way to spend the millions.

So they are going to build more council houses for low paid workers, so we can all pay more tax to keep them

No money for environment so they can pay to have all the litter picked up that our huge population throws all over the countryside however.

And how many of those contracts are actually going to “local” companies? Probably Deerglen and Dandara to build rabbit hutches!

Let’s have a breakdown of current States building contracts, to see if local firms would benefit that much.
Talk of needing imported labour for the Esplanade site makes me think the same would be the case if future proposed projects are brought forward.

Excellent news – more immigrant workers, more overcrowding, more hospital bed shortages and most of all more housing.

    Ref: P lee,
Jersey really needs people who think like you!

If the states would have freed up money’s for loans and built more homes for local families, a lot of tradesman would not of had to leave the island because of the huge house prices.

Look at the states now-throwing money everywhere……

Bring back the cable cars and make Fort Regent a centre of excellence for the arts and music.

Why not just use the surplus building workers on the Waterfront instead of bringing in a whole new load. Would also do away with the need to accommodate the new bunch.

What is going to happen once these projects are complete?! this is more like a delay of redundancies than a rescue plan.

It will be interesting to see how the States attempt to ‘rescue’ the finance industry once President Obama forces much of US investment to leave the island, which incidently no-one at all seems to have recognised the huge effect this may have on the island!
