Sound judgment is our only guide
Thursday 29th January 2009, 2:56PM GMT.
From Dr Rolf Edelenbos.
AS general practitioners we had, like the hospital (JEP, 23 January), noticed that our workload had increased significantly recently.
As primary care suppliers, we are obviously not shielded from the disease burden in the Island. Our staffing levels have been adversely affected by higher than usual absences due to illness as well.
Despite these pressures, we are endeavouring to deliver the same first-rate primary care to the Island as we have done for many years.
The request by Health chief executive Mike Pollard to general practice not to admit to hospital unless essential was therefore unnecessary and, if not taken in good spirit and assuming his good intentions, could be seen as patronising to the profession.
Patients in Jersey can be reassured that admission to the hospital through general practice will take place only on the basis of sound clinical judgment and clinical need.
