Charity begins … on the fashion front
Friday 30th January 2009, 2:59PM GMT.
CREDIT-crunched bargain hunters are hitting charity shops in their droves in a bid to beat the financial crisis.
As high-street chains struggle to survive the financial meltdown, charity shops and even sewing classes in Jersey are busier than ever. Many of the second-hand shops are reporting a surge in bargain hunters but a drop in donations.
Aspiring sewers are turning their hands to needlework and are now making and repairing their own clothes. Sewing classes at Highlands College are seeing increased interest, with lengthy waiting lists being reported.
And the new British Red Cross charity shop, which opened in Queen Street at the end of November, is also attracting new customers from all walks of life.
Manager Toni Creedy said: ‘It’s been a bit frantic. We are still trying to find our feet and establish a pattern of busy days – we don’t seem to have any quiet days lately. ‘I think everyone wants to make their money go further and there is a slow realisation that you can get some really great stuff here at some great prices.’
