Eight good men and true rewarded for long and dedicated service

EIGHT men have received medals for long service and good conduct at a ceremony at Government House. The Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, presented the medals to seven officers from the States Police and one Ambulance Service employee.
Alan Guy
Jersey-born Alan was educated at St Helier Boys School and joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as a car mechanic in 1976. After nine years in the Army he returned to Jersey and joined the police force in 1985. He was promoted to sergeant in 1997, working as a custody officer until he became an inspector in 1999. He headed the force’s training department for a number of years before taking up his current position in the pro-active team. Inspector Guy was awarded the police long service and good conduct medal.
Andrew Cousins
Liverpool-born Andrew was educated at Litherland High School and Liverpool University. He joined the British Transport Police in London in 1984 and worked in uniform and in the CID as a police constable before being promoted to sergeant on the London Underground Division in 1990. He was a search team leader for the Euro 96 football championships in England and was promoted to inspector in 1998 before transferring to Jersey as a sergeant in 2000.He was promoted to inspector in 2006 and has worked in events planning and the professional standards department. He was awarded the police’s long service and good conduct medal.
Peter Patterson
Peter was born in Berwick-on Tweed and was educated at Eyemouth High School. He served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as a car mechanic before joining the Jersey police force in 1985. He has worked in Uniformed Shift, CID, Special Branch, Crime Bureau, Firearms Instructor and the Joint Financial Crime Unit. He is currently an acting detective sergeant on his second secondment at the Joint Financial Crime Unit and was awarded the police long service and good conduct medal.
Peter Hewlett
Jersey-born Peter Hewlett was educated at Les Landes and Les Quennevais School before joining the police force in 1985. He has worked in Uniformed Shift, the Motorcycle Section, CID and the Licensing and Priority Policing Unit. He was promoted to sergeant in 2001 and has worked in Uniformed Shift, including acting as a custody officer, the Professional Standards Department, the Criminal Justice Unit and the Public Protection Team and he is currently deployed with CID. Sergeant Hewlett received the police long service and good conduct medal.
Keith Perchard
Portsmouth-born Keith Perchard moved to Australia in 1966 and was educated at Blackwood High School. He moved to Jersey in 1977 and joined the police force. He left the force in 1986 to work in Australia and returned in 1990 to resume his career with the States of Jersey Police. His career has included employment with Uniformed Shift, Special Branch Ports and the CID. He has completed a training programme in computer forensics and is currently deployed as a computer forensics officer. Detective constable Perchard has received two commendations for investigative work and was awarded the police long service and good conduct medal.
Christopher Bentley
Jersey-born Christopher Bentley was educated at Le Rocquier Secondary School before joining the Jersey police force in 1985. He has worked in Uniformed Shift, Control Room, Motorcycle Section and Special Branch.
He has received a number of certificates for good work and the detective constable was awarded the police long service and good conduct medal.
Andrew Gibaut
Jersey-born Andrew Gibaut was educated at De La Salle College and joined the police force in 1977. He has served in uniformed shifts, motorcycle section and the CID. In 1987 he emigrated to Canada, where he joined the Ontario Provincial Police in Toronto. Detective constable Gibaut served in the Major Crime Unit and the Highway Patrol Division. In 1996 he rejoined the States of Jersey Police and has served in the Uniform Division, Special Branch and the Joint Intelligence Bureau.He has received seven letters of commendation, including one from the regional director of Crown Attorneys for the Ministry of the Attorney General for the Province of Ontario. He was awarded the police long service and good conduct medal.
John Sutherland
John Sutherland spent three years in the Army before joining the Ambulance Service in August 1988, qualifying as an ambulance technician the following year. In 1991 he was one of the first five trained paramedics in Jersey and was promoted to leading ambulance paramedic later that year. While working as a paramedic team leader he gained from Warwick University a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-hospital care and post-graduate qualifications in major incident planning. He was promoted to station officer paramedic with responsibility for major incident planning and emergency planning. He helped to form the Ambulance Support Unit and to write the ambulance pre-hospital and the Health and Social Services major incident plans. He is currently acting assistant chief ambulance officer and was awarded the ambulance long service and good conduct medal.
