A RECENT walk with my dogs over the dunes at St Ouen’s Bay, which were scattered with dogs’ mess even though there was a litter bin there (flanked by an empty plastic bag holder), made me think of ways in which the vets of the Island might be able to help.

I visit my vet on a regular basis and never come away with a bill of less than £40. I am not complaining, but on the last occasion I bought a packet of 50 pet care bags for £1.62. I thought this was very good value, as well as being useful in these days when plastic bags are no longer freely available.

My suggestion, which will no doubt bring a chorus of complaint from the vets, is that if a bill comes to more than £40 for treating a dog, a packet of bags might be included for free. This will remind people to use them and make the owners feel well disposed towards doing so.

I know the vets will say that the cost over a year will be considerable and will have to be recovered in some way, but I have no doubt that they could think of ways of doing so without expressly itemising it on the bill.

If that is a non-starter, then I would hope at least that dog owners visiting the vet and paying their bills might be reminded by the staff of the availability of such bags, their relative cheapness at 3p each, and the need to maintain good relations with non-dog owners by keeping the Island clean.
