I AM writing to comment on the excellent coverage your paper has given to date of the forthcoming IBF light-heavyweight eliminator boxing bout between the former World light-heavyweight champion Clinton Woods and New York’s Elvir Muriqi.

This event is being staged by Dennis Hobson’s Fight Academy together with Steve Thomas and is being held at the Hotel de France on 14 February.

With Jersey looking to diversify and showcase itself to the outside world that it is more than an offshore finance centre, you might imagine that the powers that be at Jersey Tourism would embrace and encourage this, or indeed any type of world-class event being held here in the Island.

I also understand that this promotion is being televised live and is being beamed to millions of potential visitors, across many different countries, yet there is nothing at all noted on Tourism’s official website or, indeed, within the Tourism building itself. When I visited the Tourism office and asked about their involvement I was told that they had not been asked to get Involved.

Of course I don’t know how to run a tourism business, and have no experience in how best to showcase Jersey as an exciting, diverse location with a multitude of excellent beaches, restaurantsa and events, but surely this type of thing is something that is very different, is happening now, right here, smack bang in the middle of the Island.

At a time when Jersey is looking to diversify and appeal to all potential visitors, isn’t this is manna from heaven for them? Come on Tourism – get with the programme, wake up and smell the roses. I’m sure Mr Hobson or Mr Thomas would love to hear from them.
