Figures for January to October last year show that, overall, the number of passengers arriving in the Island by sea fell by nearly six per cent.

The UK route carried 342,543 passengers during the ten months – nearly five per cent fewer than over the same period in 2007. The French route carried 80,313 passengers, down by four per cent on the previous year, and inter-Island trippers went down by 14.4%, to 46,984 passengers.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean believes that this could change in 2009. A recent UK study shows that ferry-based holidays are likely to steal market share from flight-inclusive packages and Economic Development has now commissioned its own study on market trends, in the current economic climate and this year set aside nearly £900,000 to encourage new carriers.
