A FINE crop of old pictures has been sent in by St Clement reader Vi Norman.

Three are of school line-ups. One of those is of St Helier Boys’ School in the mid-1950s and the other is Vauxhall Boys’ School in the mid 1950s and the third is of First Tower School in the early 1950s.

Mrs Norman’s son Terry, who died aged only 22, appears in all three. In the First Tower picture, he is second from the right with a cheeky grin and a Christmas hat. A couple of rows behind him is a rather serious-looking boy sitting bolt upright. Mrs Norman said that his name was Gordon Ruaux, whose family ran the Bayview Stores at First Tower.

Mrs Norman said that Gordon also died tragically young. She said that at the time the picture was taken, Mr Downer was headmaster at the school.

In the first of the St Helier Boys’ School pictures, Terry is sitting in the front row with his arm around another boy. Mrs Norman said that this boy is Peter Cornick, who runs Lawrence Digital and Photo Dealers at Charing Cross. In the other, he is at the right-hand end of the back row with his arms folded.

Mrs Norman, who used to run La Fontaine (now the Queen’s Hotel) on Queen’s Road, has enclosed a picture of the 1950s darts team from the Britannia Hotel at Bel Royal in which her husband features in the back row.

And she has also supplied a picture of a gathering in Jersey but knows no more than that. Her question simply is, this is Jersey, but where?
