£25,000 a day – our bill for energy
Saturday 7th February 2009, 9:59AM GMT.
IT costs the public a staggering £25,000 a day to light and heat the Island.
New figures reveal that £5.6 million of taxpayers’ money goes towards funding States electricity bills with a further £3.5 million paying for gas and oil costs.
The multi-million pound energy bills have been racked up through lighting and heating States offices and properties, Housing’s communal areas, street lights and schools.
The news comes at a time when Islanders are seeing their own personal fuel bills mount up due to the 25 per cent increase in electricity prices.

£25,000 a day to light and heat the Island. Yes that is the problem, we are attempting to heat the island!
The planning department needs a sea change in energy efficiency. Aesthetics are fine but it is the physics of the built environment that counts.
Went to see Castle Quay last week. Great sales blurb, but energy efficiency was not on the agenda. The incinerator will generate a mass of hot water, but district heating is only a vague prospect.
Jersey, a rich island, prefers to pour money down the drain!

How on earth can the Treasury Minister account for only 1.6 million we spent at the JEC but the rest 3.9 million pounds are un specifired
Does the treasury not check anything if I went to my boss and said i have paid all this bill for £5,6000,000 but I can only account for £1,900,000
I know where I would be going straight to the states asking for my Reduncacy package cos my boss would tell me excatly where to go

This is another example of why we should have wind and tide power, the large initial investment will slowly pay itself back and could even make money.
I read France was having to replace a lot of its old reactors, maybe this is part of the rise and also there is a lot of new building and new buildings need new electricity supplies which involves large installation costs.

Yes, I agree Ben. We should buy in to green energy now to reap the benefits in the future. It seems the politicians and too concerned with the present and don’t look to the future!

the authorities could easily reduce this bill by switching off the street lighting and airport/harbour lighting at night. All cars have very good lighting now so lighting the roads really isnt necessary and we dont need 24 hr lighting.
