Was that really all the snow we could afford?

I AM very aware that due to the current credit crunch we are all having to make cutbacks in spending, but was that really all the snow that Jersey could afford?
Many other countries, including the UK and even our (lesser) sister island of Guernsey, managed a sufficient amount of snow to close the schools and give kids the chance of building snowmen, making slush-puppies and having snowball fights.
I was a child of the Seventies and recall those happy memories of a decent snowfall practically every year, and while my parents were stressfully subdued with frozen water-tanks, burst pipes, iced cars and heating bills, we children were delighted at not only having school cancelled but also being able to have competitions to see who could build the biggest snowman, make snow-angels and write our names with yellow snow – if you catch my drift.
This would be ritually interrupted when our frost-bitten fingers turned a scary shade of blue, telling us to rush indoors (traipsing muddy, slushy footprints all over the carpet), sip a delicious cup of hot chocolate to thaw us out, and then return to the snow again, ignoring the background bellow of dad yelling ‘Shut the door, you’re letting all the heat out!’
I am also now very aware that this recent bout of cold weather has proven that the threat of global warming was nothing more than a false promise. I’m sure that many of us would have been looking forward to enjoying summers in Jersey in which we can actually sunbathe without the risk of catching pneumonia, or go to the seaside without our ice-creams getting diluted by an unexpected shower of rain.
So for next winter, can we please all dig deep into our pockets and cough up enough for a decent bit of snow?
