Jersey hockey’s big day
Thursday 12th February 2009, 3:00PM GMT.
JERSEY’S men’s hockey squad are aiming to equal their best-ever result in the National Trophy tournament on Sunday with a home tie against Bexleyheath & Belvedere.
For a UK side to travel to the Island is almost unheard of – it has happened just once before, when Trojans visited in 2007 – but the South East London side have agreed to travel to Jersey to play the last 16 Harrod UK Trophy fixture at Les Quennevais.
If Jersey win the tie, they will equal their success of last season, when they reached the quarter-finals of the competition.
Captain Bill Aston said: ‘As far as I am aware this is the highest level of UK hockey that has ever been played in Jersey – we did host Trojans in the first round of the competition in 2007, but I believe it’s even rarer that we have played a home game in any competitive rounds of the National Cup or the National Trophy competitions. In fact, I believe it may be unprecedented.’ The match starts at 2 pm.
