Paramedics deserve a fair wage

From Emma Ward.
I WISH to add my voice to support Jersey paramedics in the ongoing dispute with their management for a fair wage. If I have understood things correctly, the problem is that the pay structure is unfair in that the telephone operators are on a higher wage than fully fledged paramedics. This can’t be right.

Paramedics train for years and continue doing so throughout their service. They are mini-doctors, nurses and social workers all rolled into one.

They respond to all sorts of different emergencies and are required to make life-saving decisions and shoulder the responsibility for the outcome of those decisions. They attend to and are often verbally abused by, vomited on, threatened and disrespected by addicts, drunks and idiots.

They are not asking for more than their share, only for a wage which reflects the job they do. Those responsible for negotiating in this dispute should stop dragging their heels and correct the situation promptly or explain why they won’t address it.
