A CHANGE in career has led to Gary Vibert qualifying as an ambulance technician after being a director in a family-run business for 17 years.

Mr Vibert (38), who is the son of Ron Vibert and the late Bunty Vibert, was a director of Vibert Marquees Ltd, who cater for weddings, other events and corporate functions.

He said that he had decided to seek a complete change of direction in his work and in more recent years had been very interested in the medical profession. He joined the States Ambulance Service in May 2008.

He said: ‘What I enjoy most about the job is the variation and not knowing what job you are going to be called out to. It is also very interesting to put into practice every day the training given.’

Becoming used to shift work is proving a bit of a challenge for him, but he said that he was already enjoying the benefits of days off as part of that routine.

‘When I started work for the Ambulance Service I soon realised that teamwork was paramount,’ he said.
He is interested in training to become a paramedic and is pleased that he made the career move to become an ambulance technician. He said: ‘I find the job exciting and there is a great sense of achievement in being able to help people.’

Mr Vibert was born in Wantage in Oxford and has lived in the Island for 29 years. He was educated at Victoria College and Highlands College and then went travelling and spent two summers in America working in children’s summer camps as a lifeguard and teaching rifle shooting.

He enjoys playing football and fishing and has been a member of Vinchelez Sports Club for 25 years. He is married to Lorianne and they have a 16-week-old baby boy, Joe.
